PICKLEBALL JOURNEY TIPS!
7 Speed Up Mistakes (Do THIS Instead!)

MISTAKE #1 - Attacking out of Position!

Attacking when you or your partner are out of position can be detrimental to your game! ONLY attack when you know you are ready to defend the counterattack!

MISTAKE #2 - Speeding Up With NO SPIN!

Disguising your speed ups will help a ton, by pretending to hit a dink, then flicking in a brushing motion with your wrist! Don’t forget the upward motion! A speed up with no spin will likely go out! Topspin is great, because air will push the ball down for you when topspin is applied!

MISTAKE #3 - Attacking for Fun, or No Target Area!

Attacking away from your opponent’s paddle ready position can lead them to overreach, and overhit causing an error! As well as aiming at their dominant sides hip or shoulder, causing them to jam up, panic, or whiff the ball completely!

TIP #1 - Offensive 3rd Shots!

If you watch today’s pro pickleball, you notice majority of 3rd shots are drives! This is to catch your returning opponent while they’re moving in! Keeping pressure applied to someone out of position, or off balance is ideal to move to higher levels!

TIP #2 - Attacking at Midcourt!

Everyone knows Collin Johns for being the reset king, but this years results havent shown that resets will win games anymore! Yet, if your opponent is hitting down at you, you should reset to neutralize the point. If you get a ball knee high and above, apply some pressure, and move in!

TIP #3 - Offensive Dinks!

Ben Johns implemented the two handed backhand dink to apply topspin and sharper, more consistent angles with his backhand dependent on the ball!

HACK #1 - Exhale As You Hit The ball!

If you have any tennis player friends that play pickleball, you may notice them breathing or even grunting when they contact the ball! There is a reason! Some people hold their breath, causing tension in their shots, and their heart racing! Relax, breathe, stay loose!

HACK #2 - Guessing & Retreating!

Guessing - It’s easier to predict where your opponents will be, when you mentally think of the options they have to end the point. When you hit the ball, check where your ball is going, and where your opponent is, then take a guess on where they will hit! Be there!

Retreating - Example: If you and your partner are dinking, and one of you pops the ball up, take a step back, widen your stance, and get ready! It is totally acceptable to give yourselves more time to react and soften the ball to re-neutralize the point!

HACK #3 - Easy Positioning Tip!

Positioning yourself for more consistency is key!

3rd shot positioning - Take your time, and never hit your 3rd shot on the rise! This may translate better to say, don’t short hop the 3rd shot! Give yourself more control!

Return positioning - If your opponents are hitting deep serves, back up a foot or more behind the baseline, and try to hit the return around your waistline!

DON’T BE LAZY! - The more physical you are with your feet, the more you’ll win! Take steps, stay balanced, stay active!
