Leveling Up, 5.0 Attacks, & 3.0-4.0!

Welcome to YOUR Pickleball Journey!

DRILL #1 - Lay a shirt or towel in front of your feet!

Your goal is to volley every dink you can, while moving your drilling partner around!

This will make you work on bending your knees, keeping your paddle up and out, while helping your partner work on footwork, and keeping their balls unattackable on the move!

DRILL #2 - Bump and Drop Drill!

Your partner will be at the kitchen, hitting deep feeds to you, while your job is to hit the ball 1 feet in the air in front of you, letting it bounce, then following through on the drop!

This is fairly difficult to explain into words, (so go watch the video! 😉 ) but this can help you getting used to accelerating your whole body into drops, keeping a consistent movement and muscle memory!

DRILL #3 - Drive Drill!

Have whichever partner that wants to work on drives stand at the baseline, while the other stands at the kitchen. Have the “driver” hit 5+ good drives in a row, once they’ve done enough, have them move a couple steps into the court after 5+more drives! Then repeat!

This will have your “driver” practice drives in all areas of the court, varying from different speeds and angles while still keeping the ball in so they’re comfortable being aggressive all over!

ATTACK #1 - (from the right side) Across the Body Attack!

In this case, you want to look for a net high ball, or a little higher on the forehand side. If your opponent is right handed, going ahead of you, and across them to their “chicken wing” or right hip, then they can freeze up, or jab the ball causing an unintended error!

Be ready for their ball to come forward if they get it back! This is more like a combination that you can predict a majority of the time!

ATTACK #2 - Backhand Flick/Roll Down the Line! (from the left side)

Slightly below the net or at net level may be a good time to give this attack a try! Going down the line on the left side to a righthanded player can again be a “chicken wing” while they’re trying to cover the line!

Usually these attackable balls can come from the opponent in front of you, or a high cross court dink from the opponent diagonal to you! Yet again the higher level you are, the less easy “winners” you will have, so be ready for a counter!

ATTACK #3 - Inside-out Topspin Dink! (from the left side)

When you’re playing the left side, look for soft, or dead dinks towards your middle. A bunch of players will just speed these dead middle dinks down the middle, but maybe you should try and aggressive inside out dink to your diagonal opponents backhand! They can become off balance, and generate another soft, defensive dink, or even a pop up! Where they might hit back to your middle forehand, or to your partner where they can erne, or speed up!

These middle dead dinks your opponents may give you can be sped up down the middle, but pretend you’re going to dink out wide, then flick the middle! Disguising your shots can change your game!

TIP #1 - Handle Drives!

A lot of tennis players are starting to play pickleball! They’re naturally going to hit hard, and keep hitting hard! Being able to handle drives is important to level up!

Don’t panic! If you panic when someone drives at you, you’ll tense up and jab the shot hitting it out, or in the net. Relax, and stay calm to properly react to the upcoming ball!

DRILL #2 - Move With the Ball!

3.0+ players tend to react to the ball, while 4.0+ players tend to be proactive to whats happening! 4.0 players are always playing or moving for the next ball instead of staying still to wait for the next ball!

DRILL #3 - Dinking With Purpose!

Instead of thinking, don’t pop the ball up, don’t hit the net, stay consistent, try to switch the mindset!

What DO you want to do? Where do you want to place the ball, how high over the net do you want your dink, what kind of spin do you want on your dink, etc! Changing your internal monologue can help when it comes to being more positive and progressing through tougher challenges later!
